Fabric Shopping in Korea!
For my classes and/or any other projects you will need certain fabric supplies to complete them. If you are one of my local peps stationed in South Korea it can be a little different than shopping Stateside for fabrics. But there are still several options local to our Camp Humphreys or Osan area for you to check out!
My favorite for beginner fabrics is Happy Quilt! It is a Great option in Pyeongtaek-si area to get what you are needing, and what I usually recommend. Also not too far of a drive. There is a link on Waze if you type in Happy Quilt it should come right up. But I will also try to add a link here. As I have personally found and trip to a new location is kinda an adventure in Korea so for newbies going your first time it can be a little interesting to find. The Waze link will take you almost directly there but it seems to just stop short of the actual building. Happy Quilt is a warehouse style building tucked behind several other buildings, so be sure to look for signs (I believe they are yellow). They have several that should point you in the right direction.
Please note if you go to Happy Quilt the Small cuts in the front are Fat Quarters and are too small for any of our current projects if you are participating in one of my classes. The pre-packaged pieces wrapped in plastic are 2 meter (yard) cuts they seem to be a slightly better deal. If you choose to buy from the rolls Happy Quilt also will only cut a minimum of 1 yard/1 meter so you will have to buy at least 1 yard of each fabric.
Happy Quilt also only accepts Won (paper bills).
No Credit Cards accepted or any other forms of payment.
So take Korean CASH!
If you aren’t feeling adventurous there are a couple other options a little closer. There is also a place in Starfield Mall called The Sewing Factory that carries Cotton fabric and there are also some minimal options at the Arts & Crafts Center here at Camp Humphreys if you would like to try one of those a little closer instead.
If you are needing stuffing for one of our projects you should be able to find pillow stuffing at Happy Quilt or the Arts & Crafts Center. You can also buy a pillow form from a store like Daiso or the PX to use as stuffing as well.
The final local place that I am personally aware of is a place in Osan called the Knit Fabric Store in Waze. This can be a fun place to check out if you want to explore. They have more of a variety of fabrics. I do enjoy remanding through this place as they have more ‘fashion fabric’ options for creating clothing. The Knit Fabric Store can be a little more hit or miss though as they appear to buy remnants from factories instead of new bolts of fabric. Meaning they could have 10 yards of something or 1 and you get what you get. So it is kinda like thrift shopping for fabric. You will have to search through piles but it can be a fun place if you want something other than cotton and are willing to hunt! That being said, if you are a beginner, I recommend starting with quilting cotton fabrics so this may not be the place to shop for you. Especially if you are purchasing fabric for one of my classes or courses. Knits and fashion fabrics are not usable for my beginner projects.
